How special cases work How to read special cases: Ketu's argala/virodha-argala is calculated in reverse (anti-zodiacal) — its casting houses may appear swapped compared to other planets; this is intentional. If two or more malefics occupy the 3rd house from a house/planet, they cast argala instead of obstructing it (a classical exception to the normal 3rd-house obstruction rule). When argala-casting and virodha-argala-casting planet counts are equal, the tie is broken by comparing the strength of the two signs involved, in order: (1) whichever sign has more planets occupying it is stronger; (2) if still tied, whichever sign is aspected by signs holding more planets (via rasi drishti) is stronger; (3) if still tied, the sign whose lord occupies the higher degree is considered stronger. This works the same way regardless of whether Rahu or Ketu is involved, since the comparison is between signs, not individual planets. A result marked 'Contested' means all three levels ended in a tie. When more than one sign casts argala or virodha-argala on either side, each classical pair (2nd↔12th, 4th↔10th, 11th↔3rd) is compared independently, and the majority of pair verdicts decides the overall result — this pairwise handling for multi-sign cases is our own implementation choice, not a rule stated explicitly in classical texts. Weak/strong labels on virodha-argala indicate the reliability of the obstruction, not a separate calculation: virodha-argala cast by a benefic planet is labeled 'strong' (a reliable cancellation of the argala), while virodha-argala cast by a malefic planet is labeled 'weak' (it technically obstructs, but should not be relied on to fully cancel the original argala). This label is descriptive only and does not feed into the strength tie-break calculation described above.

Other traditions' rules not used here Note on rule variants: Some Jaimini traditions hold that Rahu/Ketu placed in the 2nd, 4th, 11th, 3rd, or 8th from a house do not cause argala at all (rather than causing it normally) — this app does not apply that exclusion. Some traditions also use a degree/longitude comparison (the obstructing planet's longitude must exceed the argala-causing planet's longitude) as the tie-break, rather than the sign-strength comparison used here. Some traditions also base strength comparisons on shadbala or sthanbala directly, a point of active disagreement even among classical sources. Some sources set the 3rd-house malefic pileup threshold at three or more malefics rather than two; this app uses two or more.

Ithasala & retrograde motion

Retrogression modifies the application of Ithasala Yoga because the direction of motion changes.

If the faster planet is retrograde and moving away from the slower planet, Ithasala is generally cancelled, even though the ordinary conditions appear to be satisfied.
If the slower planet is retrograde, Ithasala generally becomes stronger, since both planets move toward one another and reach the exact aspect more quickly. Yogas cards show · R slow and a strengthened note; the Yogas column here marks these with ↑.
If the faster planet is retrograde but ahead of the slower planet, Ithasala may still exist because the retrograde motion causes the planets to approach one another. In such cases, the actual planetary motion should always be examined rather than relying solely on zodiacal longitude.
A planet that is about to become retrograde also deserves careful consideration. Even if the ordinary conditions suggest an Ithasala, the yoga may fail to materialize if the faster planet reverses direction before reaching the exact aspect.
